A global pandemic. Social and racial injustices. Acts of treason. This last year has made many of us angry and outraged, but often unsure of how to turn that anger into activism. Authors Pamela Harris and Emma Kress propose this powerful outlet for our anger: create social justice stories. We will begin our session by engaging in a short free writing to access the participants’ anger. We’ll follow this with offering some words of wisdom from DeRay McKesson, activist and author of On the Other Side of Freedom: The Case for Hope. He posits that since we have never seen a fair and just world, we cannot create one without imagination and hope. That’s how SCBWI authors can be activist authors. We’ll then offer a step-by-step guide for moving from anger to activism, or spark to finished story. This presentation will be co-facilitated with Emma Kress, author of the debut YA novel, Dangerous Play and Pamela Harris, debut author of When you Look Like Us.
